As a physician, I see a number of patients with complex PTSD. This book provides validating and accessible advice without making patients feel ashamed or crazy. There are a number of tools and easily accessible exercises to help people heal from trauma. In particular, the author provides easy to understand ways to deal with fear and anger, as well as dissociation. These latter concepts are rarely discussed in comparable books. I highly recommend this book to therapists and patients struggling with complex trauma.

This book identifies emotions and symptoms of trauma that most other trauma books I’ve read don’t address. Like rage— it’s a very big issue for ppl who have been traumatized over and over. It’s hardly ever spoken about in trauma books, and it’s something I struggle with managing. It also discusses why a person who has been traumatized feels overwhelmed a lot by things or reacts with strong emotions to triggers. It really helps you to UNDERSTAND why you feel the way you do, and adds ideas for managing it. It talks about intense anxiety episodes when someone who has been traumatized feels trapped and how to decompress from that intense feeling. No other book is written like this one and I highly recommend if you’re still searching for answers to understand what the hell is happening to you!

At first I just bought this on a whim. I've already been diagnosed, sure, but like other books I've tried, nothing felt "right" about what I was feeling. Until this one. It's been extremely eye opening, validating, weird, and life changing all at the same time! I cried a bit, I won't lie. I highly recommend this book to others who feel like they might have or diagnosed with C-PTSD. It's helped me learn so much about myself and it's a helpful tool in improving myself.

As a former health psychologist and professor for many years, I strongly recommend this book (full disclosure - written by a former student of mine, though that would not be reason enough for this strong recommendation). The author’s precise writing style and clarity of descriptions make reading it a delight. There is sufficient theoretical overview to understand the presenting problems, but the ultimate focus is always on practical and specific exercises and interventions that are based in the scientific literature. This makes the book useful for consumers, but also for professionals who are looking for useful overviews of Complex PTSD or practical adjuncts to their own work with patients. Dr. McClintock Greenberg demonstrates not only a thorough understanding of the problems involved, but also a deep compassion for people experiencing these problems and respect for their rights of self-determination. I am proud to call her a former student.Jack B. Schaffer, PhD, ABPP

As a psychotherapist, I love Dr. McClintock Greenberg's easily understandable description of CPTSD and all the ways it can affect one's views of themselves and the world. You feel like she is sitting in a room talking right to you in a caring way. This workbook both validates one's journey with CPTSD while offering specific cognitive interventions to manage strong emotions and problematic behaviors. I also appreciate the chapter on "finding a therapist" by helping clients to determine their preferences.

Although there are exercises in the workbook that bring awareness of the body, the use of somatic therapies was never mentioned. Although they are not "evidence-based", the neuroscience research supports evidence that trauma is held in the body, and that both somatic resources and somatic trauma processing are essential for healing.

My therapist and I work together through different workbooks and research on anything that helps with my sessions. Even though this workbook is newly released, it really has helped me so much during my sessions and I felt seen. You could work on this on your own, but I highly recommend working on this together with a mental health professional to help you sort anything out that you may come across in this healing journey. Extremely grateful for this purchase and it is worth every single penny.

I was struck by the elegant accessibility of this workbook, where complex and nuanced ideas were put forth in plain language. The author also clearly holds a great deal of empathy for those who suffer from C-PTSD, and the reader of this book will feel invited to reflect upon their struggles and their suffering with the author's clear-eyed compassion as a guiding emotional tone. Importantly, there is great clarity offered around the experience of C-PTSD, the historical but still pervasive pitfalls of engaging with the mental health system when suffering from this disorder, and therapeutic approaches to addressing the common disruptive internal experiences and their behavioral expressions. I was particularly struck by the important chapters on "Dealing with Avoidance Mindfully" in which the adaptive and destructive elements of avoidance as well as the benefits and potential costs of exposure were described, and on "Mentalization and Authenticity" in which one finds a very lucid description of the concept of mentalization and an outline of concrete steps towards its cultivation. Suicidality, substance abuse, and dissociation are all taken up as well, framed always with a kind and calming clarity. I will use this workbook as a resource for my clients with C-PTSD, particularly those who have been given a diagnosis of borderline personality disorder (BPD) and who have felt both maligned and mystified by the way the field of mental health has reflected back an understanding of their experience.

The Complex PTSD Coping Skills Workbook is a must have for individuals experiencing C-PTSD as well as the mental health professionals who work with them. Dr. McClintock Greenberg has masterfully broken down this complicated topic into manageable segments. The book starts with an easily digestible explanation of the differences between C-PTSD and PTSD, then moves through segments of individual experiences of symptoms and emotions that commonly occur within the disorder. There are helpful clinical vignettes as well thoughts about underlying reasons some people develop C-PTSD. The workbook is rounded out with thoughts about working through C-PTSD, whether on one's on or in the care of a therapist. Finally, Dr. McClintock Greenberg lays out ideas around pitfalls in working with this disorder and ways to either avoid them or work with/through them. The workbook's inclusion of everyday language, and refreshing absence of industry jargon, makes it an incredible tool for both clinicians and para-professionals or lay people. I found the chapter on finding the right therapist one of the most useful guides I've seen. I will be recommending this to patients in my own practice who have endured C-PTSD as well as students and colleagues. This workbook is just the non-complex antidote the mental health field is needing for working with such a complex and insidious disorder. Hats off to Dr. McClintock Greenberg for using clarity and simplicity as her guides!
