In Shame-Informed Therapy, Patti Ashley writes about the importance of allowing all feelings to be fully acknowledged and expressed. As someone who helps people with grief, I see tremendous value in her perspectives. Her workbook gives the reader a clear roadmap to how our feelings influence our behavior and our relationships. Her worksheets, exercises, and mindfulness meditations are helpful tools that give you permission to feel all of your feelings and find healthy outlets for expression. I recommend it to anyone who is helping people discover their authentic self while going through grief, trauma, or any other life challenges.

Excellent read! As a therapist who has long been interested in this topic, I found this book to be both informative and practical. Dr. Ashley has presented some very complex theory (e.g., Polyvagal Theory) in a manner which is easy to understand, and therefore useful for the professional and lay person alike. Interwoven throughout the book are easy to use forms to help the reader self-explore, and develop greater self-compassion and self-esteem. I believe that "shame" is a primary emotion, and that this book is therefore relevant for all of us.

Someone who is not a fan on how psychologists work may not like this book. Although the book is great, I personally prefer when a book like this is written by a trauma-informed (especially childhood trauma) clinical mental health counselor because I like more their methods and approaches.

With that being said, the book has good information, it is easy to understand. Anyone in the mental health field (professional or student) should have this book along with The Body Remembers by Babette Rothschild. I think it is the perfect combination because one is very detailed about what trauma does to the brain and body, while this book is detailed about what shame does. Trauma and shame are siblings and the more you understand trauma, the more you understand why shame interferes with trauma recovery, especially when you do not have a support system.

Dr Ashley has pulled together many therapeutic models into a coherent toolbox for therapists to use with clients who may be particularly difficult to work with. Her focus is on clients carrying the wound of being shamed, but her worksheets seem valuable for anyone wanting to uncover his or her authentic self. Easy to read and well organized, she also explains the biology behind the rigid patterning developed by clients suffering from shame, and advises therapists to watch for their own trigger responses.

Dr. Patti Ashley strikes again...this time tackling one of the most important (if not THE most important) topics to shine light upon. In her breakthrough book, she's created a turn-key approach for therapists to working with clients and friends with her worksheets, stories, and depth of insight.

As a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist I found Dr. Ashley’s newest book, Shame-Informed Therapy, to be very informative and practical. In the text sections Dr. Ashley seamlessly weaves together the bio/psycho/social origins and impacts of core shame. The workbook sections are quite instructive and are personally and professionally relevant in exploring this important topic.
