So far I love how she can relate to us through her trauma and help me with my trauma as my coach recommends this book for her trauma victims. Again I have a coach and just got some therapy for myself started along with this book and my depression meds and plant based supplements so I’m doing a few things with this book to help me heal from trauma and pain from the past. If you suffer from ptsd symptoms this book and a therapist can help you. This is a great book for people trying to heal from trauma. I highly recommend this book as she was a victim as well and talks to you from a victim to another victim stand point and not a therapist.

I liked the time and care the author took in writing this book. There are several valuable sections for coping and working through trauma. My challenge came about 2/3 of the way through the book where she went super heavy on her new age philosophy even at one part going so far as to say “We seldom consider the possibility that God may not be all powerful or may not get involved in human life this way.” when discussing pain/suffering. I like this book but I wish I knew how the subject of religion/God would be approached before purchasing. I realize that not everyone believes as I do so with that said, I firmly stick to the thought of “eat the meat and spit out the bone.”

This book is so very well written. It is a methodical, step by step guide to understanding how trauma in your life can affect your immune system, how trauma creates symptoms such as nervousness and anxiety. The author has been through trauma herself, and healed it. She provides resources and guides on how to find the help you need to resolve your own trauma and recover your own life. One of the best books I've ever read. I highly recommend it!

As a psych major this book is accurate and well written for people who have no psychology background. It also does not have detailed first story accounts of trauma and therefor should not be triggering to trauma victims. This book is actually given out at my school for victims of trauma who are trying to heal. It has great exercises throughout the book to help a person recognize and work through their traumas.

Once I was diagnosed with PTSD- my therapist gave me this book. He specializes in several body/mind therapies and uses this books with his clients a lot. It really helped me understand trauma- and how in has manifested in ways that I didn't realize were related. It helped me gain an objective view on my wounds and how they've affected my nervous system, body AND mind. This book is ESSENTIAL for anyone with a trauma disorder who wants to really understand how it's affecting you on all levels, how to manage it, and deeply powerful perspective- clinically- on how to treat trauma holistically. My therapist used TRE therapy- which is a body based healing method- very similar to what is in this book. The theory and healing contained in this book is profound!

I jump around in this book quite a bit, but it's got sections for everybody. From the person who is new to learning their healing and beginning their journey after trauma, to being able to speak and help loved ones help the trauma survivors. This is a great read. I still have not read the whole thing front to back, but it is a book that helps to normalize some of the confusing and scary emotions and symptoms that survivors experience. I, personally, often felt crazy because I was a happy, quiet girl who changed into someone who now feels a lot of anger and has very little patience for when people seem to be using me. I figured, I was broken and that whole shift was just a result of the trauma. While this shift was a result of the trauma, I have discovered that it is very normal and me being able to be assertive instead of passive aggressive (as I was before my traumas) was actually a good thing. Also, I read the portion meant for my loved ones and it helped me be able to put into words how I needed them to help me. Most days, I simply needed a listening ear and someone to see me for who I am, instead of seeing me for the trauma that I have lived though. Being able to now tell my family and friends this has helped us all be able to better navigate the road to my healing without them feeling alienated and it has helped decrease the over all frustration as well.

My therapist recommended this book to me while we were working through some traumatic past experiences. Very good information on trauma, how our bodies react to future trauma, and what we can do to feel grounded when we're triggered. I liked the variety of examples and applicable situations she mentions (PTSD, rape, abuse, etc...) so it never felt like something didn't apply to my situation. I used her grounding techniques a couple of times and they were very effective. I liked the tone of the book--very soothing and easy-going without being "hippie." I'd recommend it.

This has to be the best book ever written on this subject. I stumbled across it accidentally and found myself described on every page. I have completed my own healing from childhood emotional and physical abuse thanks to a great therapist, and a supportive husband and daughter. I read whole chapters to my husband. It was eerie -- I had never realized what a textbook case I was. But more important was that the end of the book, I realized how precisely my own healing had followed that described in this book. Feel whole again. Read this book. "Happiness," says Jamie Lee Corie, "is the best revenge." She is right.

After a experiencing a very difficult traumatic event in my life, I was in search of a book that could help me understand what to expect in the healing process with out being to complex or laddeled with stories of other peoples trauma. This book was very useful as a resource guide to helping me to navigate through my vast range of emotions in all the fallout that comes after the trauma my life being turned up side down. I also REALLY liked that the emphasis was not all about how I was feeling but instead showed me very clearly that there are actual phisioligical body reactions that occur plus the steps to help yourself heal. It was great to learn that I was not alone in my crazy thoughts and my bodies reactions to such emense stress.
This book was easy to read and insightful especially if you are type of reader that like facts instead of bunches of comforting words about feelings. It covered all topics from body reations to medicine and cognitive theropy.

Even therapist couldn't help. This book really did help her. She sais she loved and thanked me so much for it. That is priceless to me. This book was extremely helpful to me. It is a very well written book which explains Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, both from the the clinical view of a trained, credentialed therapist, and also from the personal healing journey of someone who has traveled the dark road of the burdensome symptoms of the disorder, and has come out to the light of recovery. I don't know what I could say that some other reviewer hasn't already said. I have read a lot of books and articles on PTSD. None of them even come close to the excellence of THIS book. My understanding is that the author has "been there" herself--I think that makes a huge difference. I actually understand my symptoms now. I make sense to myself for the first time in my life. Whenever I re-read this book I get the feeling that the author personally observed my life for 40 years, and then wrote a book about why I now do the things I do and feel the way I feel.

This book is an absolute must read for anyone that has experienced trauma throughout their lives. It is useful both for those who are not yet in therapy, and those who are in therapy as well. Even though in therapy myself, it's nice to hear from someone that has experienced trauma themselves. The book opens your eyes to the things that have most likely been affecting you your whole life that you may not have been aware of. The first half of the book covers the effects of trauma biologically, physically, etc. Then it moves into the second half which provides tools to help you along the journey of healing. It is written in an easy to read format, providing definitions for most technical words, making it easy for someone at any level of mental health knowledge to understand its content. It also holds valuable exercises that can be done to reflect on your current situation and are useful to come back to as time goes on to see how you are progressing. I would DEFINITELY recommend this book!

I have purchased several books related to PTSD and have found only bits and pieces of each book insightful. As a result, I have many unread books sitting around gathering dust. This book, however, I read cover to cover. The author explains PTSD and its physical and emotional effects in a clear and consise language that the average non-medical person can understand. I gained more understanding from this one book than I did from the five others I have. I recommend this book to anyone who is feeling the effects of PTSD or anyone who wishes to understand it.

I found this book to be really helpful. It wasn't as detailed as some of the others I have read but its kind of like a basic guide to start your healing from trauma. It shows how most trauma can bring other disorders into your live such as panic disorder and ocd.

This book is the most helpful and TRUTHFUL book that I have read about recovering from an unhappy past, and I have read a LOT of books! It is not preachy or abstract, like books written from educated "experts." The author knows what's-what when it comes to fears and emotional turmoil. She gives REAL help when it comes to getting a grip on past hurts and traumas. Have a pen handy to write down and GET OUT all your mixed-up memories and feelings and thoughts as you read. This book is like a rope handrail that you can hold onto as you begin to excavate out the black crap inside that is causing trouble in your life. I'd definitely also recommend reading this book with Rokelle Learner's "Daily Affirmations" so you can renew yourself with positive and life-giving ideas.

The thing that I, and the clients I've assigned this book to as homework (and they have actually read it, or some of it- there's no rush) have all said that the authenticity stands way out. They get that this is not theoretical, it experiential. The fact that she doesn't recount trauma after trauma but instead makes the correct assumption- we know enough about trauma already and then begins to give us something that will help us shake the bounds of the constructed self off..Even though it does not directly recount trauma that doesn't mean it's not potentially triggering (I got triggered last night by it). If it wasn't tickling the limbic system it would be all left brained and that's one of my, I can't speak for anyone else, most polished maladaptions that is socially acceptable. She nails it in the first chapter, the second etc. I teach yoga for free to vets with PTSD. The body work is hugely important. I am also a RYT, trained in IFS, and a MFT. I buy these books 3 or 4 at a time. I HIGHLY recommend this book.

I am a trauma survivor and someone with PTSD and also a professional in the behavioral health field. I bought this book for myself because my PTSD has been pretty bad lately and I wanted to learn some coping strategies, etc. This book is written in such an easily accessible language that anyone can read it. I am a clinician but the PTSD has left my brain kinda mushy and I have some comprehension problems on some days so the lack of clinical mumbo jumbo is deeply appreciated. Also the author is a trauma survivor herself and I appreciate that she isn't just coming from a clinical perspective. I'm only about a quarter of the way through the book, but I have already had several revelations based on things I have read. Highly recommended!

Well, I bought a handful of books about working on Trauma and the first couple (full of traumatic stories I was supposed to read) really did a lot more harm than good. The traumatic stories did nothing more than trigger traumatic flashbacks and unhinge my bipolar disorder!

THIS BOOK HAS NO TRAUMATIC STORIES.

It is an intelligent, insightful, informative way to help those who are dealing with trauma learn about it and help themselves move on. The content is written in such a way that it is easy to stop without becoming overwhelmed, so for that I'd give it a big thumbs up.

The only reason I was considering giving it four stars instead of five is that some of the chapter topics are skimmed over so briefly they can be difficult to understand without further research and re-reading several times. If you're reading with your therapist (mine bought the book to read it together) that helps alleviate a lot of the confusion, so I'd definitely recommend that if you can do it.

This is the only book on trauma that has often left me with a smile on my face when I closed it instead of a frown, so that is a huge feat when dealing with something as terrifying as trauma!

This book was such an eye-opener!! And I have a Bachelors Degree in Social Work! I had no idea how many of the things I dealt with regularly were actually symptoms from my trauma! And that understanding alone was worth the price. The second half of the book goes over different types of therapies and such that can assist in overcoming the trauma and I am excited to try some of them out, which were new to me.

The author writes with such compassion that you truly feel valued as a reader. Definitely worth buying!!!

I was skeptical of this book at first. My first impression was that this not as mechanical, technical, or hard science as I prefer my "self help" books to be. Well, thankfully, I was wrong and right about that. The writing is accessible but smart but Cori also includes the science behind complex trauma. This was an amazingly validating resource and I continue to recommend to those I encounter who could benefit. If you suffer from complex PTSD please do yourself a favor and get this book.

I am half way through this book. It is bedside to refer to and I am intentionally reading slow. I have found this book to make sense of the many different ways we experience trauma, all the different labels trauma is given, and appreciate the authors language and respect to the reader( the book is not "triggering" new word used: "activating")

I am healing PTSD and DID and this book has been a great tool for me. It has helped me inaddition to my therapy, and has also helped me to participate more fully in my own self healing.

This book lives up to that title, absolutely.
Thank you, Jasmin, for writing such a helpful, life-saving book!

I love this book. It's comprehensive yet written in an experiential manner (rather than in an overly clinical/analytical tone). It's a pleasure to read -- as if the author was here talking with you directly, in a simple, warm, knowledgeable, helpful way. This book acknowledges the many effects of trauma, and gives clear, practical advice about the tasks necessary to heal. Appropriate for survivors and clinicians alike. A true gem.
