This is a very thorough textbook, and I think that is appropriate. Many psychological tests are given and taken without a complete understanding of what went into making and interpreting the tests. This book explains all of that. Understanding the details helps the test giver truly understand what the test may or may not be revealing. Misunderstanding the results of a test can have strong negative repercussions in some cases. This book can help avoid that. The book will also most likely teach about tests the test giver is not even aware of.

I would also recommend this to anyone undergoing psychological testing so that they can personally understand what is being measured, what isn’t, and any factors that impact the way the test is interpreted.

You wouldn’t think such a book would be necessary, but my mother-in-law has a Masters in social service and gives the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator test to her clients. Her opinion is that a person should strive to me in the middle of each of the 4 scales measured. I can only hope that her clients read this book, though I realize that probably none of them have.

    But that’s JustMe.

Foremost, as a professor, I strongly prefer hardcover texts. They last longer, damage less easily, and retain their value for a much longer period (i.e. it is much easier to sell these back at the end of the semester). So, I was instantly won over when I saw how sturdy this textbook is. And, yes, things like this really do matter.

Now, this review is mostly for professors who are seeking a new text for their course. Therefore, it is important to note that this current edition closely focuses on critical thinking questions. This is an outstanding choice since these genuinely engage the student, making this textbook more interactive.

Each new chapter clearly defines the learning objectives. This prepares students for the material. Moreover, "In the News Boxes" break-up the text and instead of being "fluff," these boxes provide current and relevant information for students. This is greatly appreciated (since, with many texts, I just tell my students to skip these sections ... but, I would not do so in this case). The same applies to the "For Your Information Boxes."

Each chapter ends with "key concepts" and carefully crafted critical thinking questions. This allows students to review with care.

Given the many changes to this text, I think that even professors who use an older edition would want to consider this newer one. Highly, highly recommended for being student centered, meticulously edited, and entirely academic (without the fluff).

First, prospective readers should ignore the reviews citing the condition of the RENTAL book because it has nothing to do with the content. Next, this is superb. This is NOT a general psychology or Intro to Psych book but rather a practical approach to psych TESTING which is a much needed addition to the foundations of practice. Well organized this provides a clear framework of commonly encountered testing measures, challenges and concerns in an easy to read and highly accessible manner.

Helpful text, written very concisely. It's one of very few that I'm keeping instead of trading back in for cash. It's rare that a textbook is written so well. Has great summaries and study aids, and is the most current information right now.
