‘Clinical Handbook of Couple Therapy’ is a series of dense articles written by experts in their respective modalities for couples therapy. I’m unsure how to review this book because there may seem to be implicit conflicting claims between various articles. However, the tentative approach that science done well takes leads me to believe that possible tension is a sign of exploration rather than incoherence or dishonesty.
The target audience is university students and therapists, especially as a reference manual. This book was published in 2015 and is relatively modern and up-to-date. Regarding modalities, I’m most convinced by Emotionally Focused Therapy as effective for building secure attachment – if you wish to dive deeper, I recommend Sue Johnson’s
recent EFT works,
A Primer for EFIT,
and
Changing Emotion with Emotion.
Some things that stand out from this book are discussion of specific listening and connection skills in Solution Focused Therapy and the detailed discussion of systems theory. I just read this book straight through, and it’s tricky to offer a professional review on the fly without notes. But, overall, I enjoyed putting my therapist hat back on quite a lot! Having read roughly 70 relationship books, including ~10-15 therapy books, I learned a lot from this reference textbook, and there is much fresh insight. Enjoy!
This is a must-have and must-use comprehensive guide to evidence-based forensic CBT assessment and treatment, that should be required reading for criminal justice courses, mental health professionals, magistrates, and parole officers. Drs. Tafrate, Mitchell, and Simourd have translated the latest in forensic science into a practical and interactive methods to elicit and champion change in clients. With a dedicated focus on reduction of recidivism, and an easy-to-learn format which includes scripts, handouts, and templates, “CBT with Justice-Involved Clients” won’t be collecting dust on your bookshelf!
My advice is to start in the back with standardized test selection, worksheets to analyze anger episodes, and fillable treatment plans for harmful lifestyle patterns. Invaluable resources!
This book is an absolutely amazing resource especially for someone just starting out in the field like myself. This book provides various user friendly tools, worksheets and interventions that help identify and address criminogenic needs of all justice involved clients. These exercises are constructed in an affirming and client-center manner that allows the clients to provide their own insight on their strengths and areas for improvements. Being a new case manager, I have utilized many of these scripts and interventions to improve my CBT and Motivational Interviewing skills to elicit more change talk from clients about making real changes in their lives. This book has so much to offer and I 100% recommend it for anyone looking for resources specific to justice involved clients!
This book is an excellent resource for any clinician working with clients involved with the criminal justice system! It has a lot of worksheets and examples that have made it easier for me to use the material with my own clients. I particularly enjoyed the detailed discussion of criminal risk domains and how they can inform case conceptualizations. The book is well-written, engaging, and informative. I highly recommend it!
This book is great. I have been working with probation clients for several years, but this book provides a fresh perspective that allows me to easily work with my clients. I have seen changes in my clients already!
