  1. They key take away from this review, that I want people to understand, is the down to earth-ness this book has. Pederson has a way with words in both this and his DBT manual that make it easy to read, comprehend, and hard to put down. I’d almost make the comparison that it like the Harry Potter of the “therapy manual” world – in that you want to read more and wonder “wow, what new knowledge is he going to give next!?”

Definitely recommend for anyone, DBT oriented or otherwise, as it is applicable to many theories and settings.

  4. I have been studying and using DBT in my therapy pracitice for approximately seven years, and can only say I wish I had had this book seven years ago! It is one of the best resources I have every found on understanding and applying DBT in group and individual therapy. I lead a DBT consultation team and a woman’s DBT skills group at CrossRoads Counseling Centers in St. Louis, and this book has been an invaluable resource for learning how to improve our DBT program, and to guide our consultation team meetings. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is interesting in either learning about or improving their use of DBT in their clinical practice. It is very readable and immediately applicable.

  5. This book provides a fresh and much needed update to DBT. Dr. Pederson covers the essentials of DBT clearly and concisely, making this book a much better read and ultimately more helpful than Linehan’s textbook. Pederson makes a strong argument for flexible applications of DBT with the beginning of the book covering a lot of research to back up this position. He’s both convincing and it’s a refreshing change from more rigid (and elitist) adherent DBT therapists who seem to think there is but one take on DBT (dialectics anyone?).

It is clear from the book that Pederson does not worship Linehan but has reverence for the approach. For those looking for an understandable and thought-provoking presentation of DBT, this is it. Note that this book is not a skills manual, but a book on DBT as a theoretical orientation and how to apply it with clients. My only negative is about the price. I almost didn’t buy it because it is more expensive than other DBT books, but really the difference is skipping a couple stops at the coffee shop. I’m glad I didn’t let that stop me. Highly recommended!
